Preeclampsia, known also as “toxemia” and “pregnancy-induced hypertension,” is a condition involving high blood pressure and increased protein in the urine. Its cause is unknown. Some believe it is passed genetically, others think diet may factor in. Autoimmune diseases and vascular problems are other suspects. Failure to diagnose the problem quickly and correctly can have lifelong repercussions. Complications can include bleeding/hemorrhaging, placental insufficiency/abruption (premature separation of the placenta), liver or kidney problems and seizure or stroke. In very rare instances, preeclampsia can also lead to death.

Diagnostic error can occur from lab work, switched files, or other avoidable incompetency. We examine records for proteinuria (protein in urine), liver enzymes and low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), clear warning signs to any competent medical caregiver. We look for proper prenatal care and at the follow up care given after delivery. Test results, from blood clots to ultrasound, are also closely examined.
